Doing everything yourself is the only way to get things done right…I know…but in this article we will walk you through ten reasons to ditch the DIY mentality and get good at one thing. We are aware that the DIY mindset is important, and vital and we are also aware that if you try to do it all…you won’t do it at all. Before we get knee-deep in irony, let’s get started with why you want to set limits. Here’s some food for thought:
- You can have the best promotions, posters, brand, etc. in the world, but if no one likes your music, guess what, you’ve got a problem. The one thing you MUST be great at is the music part.
- If you are pretty good at many things, the person who is really good at them will get the job over you.
- Cleverness and charm can get you far…but only so far.
- Would you listen to your own music? If the answer is yes, thank the stars. If the answer is no, you need to reassess.
- This isn’t rocket science. Follow your heart.
- When you focus on one thing, you find all kinds of nuances within it you didn’t know existed. This makes it more exciting for you as an artist, and for the listner/viewer.
- When you dig deep into something, or immerse yourself in an artform, you are going to come out with a deeper understanding of it. This will translate for you as a person, and for those you encounter.
- Carpe diem. You can still try new things of course, but you can be guided by your artistic impulse and not feeling like the world is on your shoulders!
- If you are really good at one thing, people come to you and you don’t have to chase them.
- It’s counterintuitive but if you focus in on something, you will get the results you are trying to achieve by casting a wide net.
We do not call this legal advice–or career advice–just food for thought.
