In cities like Chicago, Blues is alive and well. Yet, the artform has been faced with challenges, mostly from other genres who are stealing from the fruit tree of the Blues. Therefore, I have to appreciate the title of “Super Black Blues” which is a clever pun on color as well as a statement about how Blues can be dilluted in its vibrancy by musicians who take the surface of it but not the soul. This music is jam-packed while never slipping into being a “jam” — it’s purposeful and powerful. On this album Super Black Blues, it’s good to hear the music in its concentrated state, without the horrific aftertaste of Blues-Rock which is sometimes more prevalent in interpretations.
